DNS (Domain Name Service)

DNS stands for Domain Name Service, an Internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses. Because domain names are alphabetic, they are easier to remember. The Internet, however, is really based on numeric IP addresses. Every time you use a domain name, therefore, a DNS service must translate the name to a corresponding IP address.

For example, the domain name cocacola.com translates to the IP address of 129.33.45.163. DNS is the service that performs this translation.

The DNS system is its own network. If one DNS server does not know how to translate a particular domain name, it asks another one, and so on, until the correct IP address is returned. If DNS fails, websites cannot be located and email delivery stalls.
